Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G.
Komen, that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever.
In 1982, that promise became Susan G. Komen for
the Cure and launched the global breast cancer movement. Today, Komen for the Cure is
the world's largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists
fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize
science to find the cures.
The Bayou Region affiliate is one of 125 affiliates and services the parishes of Terrebonne, LaFourche, St. Mary, St. James, and Assumption.
Thanks to events like the Komen Race for the Cure®, we have invested nearly $1 billion to fulfill our promise, becoming the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world.
Affiliate History
The Bayou Region Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure was incorporated in 1999. This year we will hold our 11th Race for the Cure. Besides the Race, our only other fundraiser is the Beast Feast. The Bayou Region Affiliate began in response to a need in the geographic region for increased awareness about breast health and a way to inform women about the importance of mammograms. The CEO of the local hospital was instrumental in beginning the 501c3 to incorporate the Bayou Region Affiliate.
Komen Race for the Cure
Our first race was held in 1998 and we had 700 participants. We are currently up to over 1,700 participants. Our race attracts people because of its ability to be more than just a race. It is held at a park and we always have a band. People tend to stay up to three hours after the race to socialize and enjoy the food and refreshments. We also have a jambalaya cook-off that day. The men get really into this event and the participants get to enjoy the delicious results.

Beast Feast
Beast Feast is a very unique and popular fundraiser in which we invite all the local doctors and their family and friends to a live and silent auction. Beast Feast is an attraction for outdoorsmen because we auction off mainly wildlife products. Each year our favorite auction item is a black lab puppy! Also, wild game is served on the night of the event for everyone to enjoy. We just recently held our 8th annual Beast Feast and once again it was a major success.
We offer support and hope to everyone touched by breast cancer. Contact us by email or call (985) 493-4448 to find out more.
